People (Who Need People)

But for this outward, physical shell, who are they?  Who are WE?

They are book covers of fiction, comedy, drama, dreams;  happenstance, pain, self-destruction; images of effort, knowledge, laughter, tears, creation.

We are living shells on this beach called earth, waiting to be plucked and held to someone's ear, listening for the sound of the sea.

These are stories often told, but longing to be read again.  Who are we to recoil from their telling, and judge the artist's rendering?

Here And Gone

"I dreamt I could fly,
these wings of clouds.
color, breeze, silence -

a sequence of vision
mimics life; a wisp of season,
gone."

START SPREADIN' THE NEWS: NEW YORK NEW YORK

So yeah:  I live in New York.  Say that to folks back home in Texas and they tend to wrinkle-up their brows and flash a momentary look of hostility.  I'm Texan, born and raised.  I love that I'm from Texas.

But after over 30 years in New York, I'm constantly reminded of my home state.  My adopted state looks like a not so lost sibling.  Corn, soy beans, wheat, diary cows, vineyards, apple orchards, rolling hills, farms, and yes, big skies.

I'm a Texan in a New York state of mind.

15th Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival

Today, July 2, 2016, marks the last day of nine for the 15th Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival.  During the past week, I tried to find a few uncommon shots around the festival, including a couple of 'people' photos.  (I'm not always comfortable taking 'people' shots!)  Below is a compilation of some of the photos I took during the past week.

I only took in two shows this year.  One was a performance by Makoto Ozone and Tommy Smith.  The other show was Lizz Wright.  Both were wonderful performances!  Maybe next year I'll spring for a Club Pass, take the week off, and attend as many shows as I can!

Moods Of The Moment

It's been more than two months since I've posted here.  Life gets busy sometimes.  Two days ago, I was in the 'life gets busy' mode.  Getting up at 5am, I worked all day.  After 10 hours on the job, and an hour commute, I visited a friend in the hospital.  Then I dashed home and mowed the front lawn, and after that, went to the gym for a swim.    There hasn't been much time for photography.

However, coming home from that gym visit, the sun was just about to set.  It isn't out of the way to take a turn and go to a section of the shore on Lake Ontario before going home.  It was a calm evening, and I took my time with a few photos.

Here are two wildly different perspectives of the same sunset,  at the same time, with two different camera and lenses.  Interesting how different visual moods can be experienced by watching one moment.

Hues Of Letchworth Blue

I posted several photos last year that I took at Letchworth State Park south of Rochester, NY in a series I call Different Hues Of Letchworth Blue.  Letchworth is often called the Grand Canyon of the East, and was voted the number 1 of 10 best state parks in the US by USA Today in 2015.  It's about a 45 minute drive for me.

Here are a few more photos I took this week for that Letchworth Blue series.  Making plans for my second photo/epigram exhibit this summer.  It will be a Letchworth State Park showing of photos I've taken there over the past couple of years.   More on that as it develops!

These four photos were taken on March 7, 2016.

A Rose Is A Shell Is A Rose

rose

each supple petal parts from many others:
movement, color, texture, fragrance, purpose.

the rose is a shell, a revelation of each deliberate
effort, and recompense for the inner child of fear.
