move

listen with your eyes
understand with your ears
learn through speech
guide with silence
teach with thought
move with the dawn.

broken horn

the halo
you placed
upon my head
broke my horns:

well,
only
one.

shadows

shadows
dancing beneath
lifeforms of all variations are
three dimensions flattened into one where
lifeforms of all variations are
dancing beneath
shadows.

century of nights

night fog
softened street lamps,
dampened brick roads.

through pub windows
I lived
a century
of nights
in a
cloud.

part the waters

never mind
the years:

my mind sharp,
memory vivid,

I can still
jump waves and
part the waters,

my imagination
skiing on
an ocean.

still I do

as a young man
I had dreams.

still I do,

if only sleep
would last
a few minutes
longer.

terrible

what terrible retribution
we lay upon ourselves
for the unhappiness we allow
to define our lives.

Poem © 2007 by R. Burnett Baker
10 past 3

I desire sleep without waking
in the night to pee
or look at the clock and see
that it's 10 past 3.       again.

the same as many other nights.

10 past 3's an annoying comfort, though.
lightless joy knowing
nothing will stalk me
while night/morning
suffers my
fears.
